Public Schools
Quality education is provided to students at Wakefield
Community Schools. State and nationally accredited,
484 students attend the elementary and high school. The maximum
capacity of the public elementary school is 250. The junior/senior
high school was built in 1977 and has a maximum capacity of 250.
It is estimated that 97 percent of the eighth grade students finish
high school.
Vocational courses offered in the high school include business, home
making, and industrial trades. Internet services are available
in the school. Adult education programs are available in the high
school in cooperation with the Northeast
Community College.
The Wakefield Activity Center, opened during the winter of
the 2001-2002 school year, is a facility open to the general public.
The Activity Center includes a brand-new gymnasium, complete with
a four-lane walking track, and a weightroom, which includes free weights,
weight machines, treadmills, and stationary bikes. For your convenience,
restrooms and locker rooms are also located in the facility. The place
is used by Physical Education classes and Weights/Conditioning classes
on a daily basis. Sports teams also use the Activity Center, usually
the junior-high and junior-varsity squads. Local residents are also
welcome and encouraged to come and lift weights and/or exercise during
the school day or during scheduled weekend hours. During the week,
the Activity Center is usually open until approximately 7:00 p.m.
Educational Service Unit
Wakefield is the headquarters for Educational
Service Unit 1, which serves six counties. Services
available in special education include program supervision, physical
therapy, occupational therapy, psychological education evaluations,
speech therapy, audiological testing, transition consultant, behaviorally
disordered student program, mentally handicapped student program, and
early childhood special education services. Other services include
staff development, teacher in-service, Internet, technology training,
school nurses, media and teacher resource library, medical delivery,
computer and equipment repair, and cooperative purchase program.
Colleges
Wakefield is part of the Northeast
Community College service area that includes the 20 counies
in northeast Nebraska. The main campus is located in Norfolk with
centers located in communities throughout the region. Northeast
offers more than 70 technical, vocational, business, and liberal arts
programs preparing students for immediate employment or for transfer
to a four-year college or university.
Wayne State College
(WSC) located in Wayne, Nebraska, serves approximately
4,000 students. WSC offers more than 40 majors and minors in eight
academic divisions including: Applied Sciences, Business, Education,
Fine Arts, Human Performance and Leisure Studies, Humanities, Math and
Sciences, and Social Sciences. Masters degrees are also available
in business and education. Wayne State College serves as a catalyst
in northeast Nebraska for education as well as cultural and economic
development. The college offers numerous theatrical and musical
